For this review i have decided to delve into the back catalouge and take a trip down memory lane. Need for speed had 6 incarnations before underground , but none of them ever caught my eye , NFS underground revamped the series by cashing in on the popularity of the fast and furious film and the growing popularity of car customisation. Developed by EA black box and published by EA there was a lot riding on the first attempt at home consoles. The game features 22 cars , including honda's , nissan , toyota , peugot and ford as well as hundreds of customising options.
===Story=== Well from the word go your racing , a brilliantley tuned car that leaves your oppenents in smoke. And then ...... you wake up from the dream and that pretty cars gone , replaced with a pretty girl though. Samantha is your freind and works as your tutor , teaching you the controls , how races work , which characters do what , the general jobs of a tutor. As you go along you win races , meet new people and make new enemies who challange you to races , in return for winning races you get special tune-ups to improve your cars handling , engine , tyres etc. You also get noticed in tuner magazines which will offer money for pictures of your cool car. The story isn't overly exciting , its not like the game has huge plot twists , the story does do a good job of leading you through and getting you nice upgrades. After all if your buying this game it's for the speed and customizing , not for the plot line. The characters are not endearing or relatable for the same reasons , you just want to race.
===Gameplay=== The game has 5 different types of races for you to attempt , circuit , knock out , sprint , drift and drag racing. Circuit is the bog standard beat everyone within a certain amount of laps. Knock out is a bit more difficult , whichever car is last at the end of the lap is knocked out until the remaining 2 cars in which 1st place is winner , This is really exciting as you know you always need to be catching up to the next car or making space between you to keep you in. Sprint is a race to a certain point , you only get 1 chance to get there as its from point A to B so you better make sure your leading the pack. Drag race is pretty obvious , you speed down the track dodging oncoming traffic and pressing the shift gear everytime the speedometer reaches red. Finally drifting , the most difficult type of race. In this you must go round a circuit a number of times drifting as close to the wall as possible to gain more points. The car is very slippery and so very difficult to handle when taking the corners , this race is full of excitement and you do feel really skilled when you get a high score.
===Customizing=== This game has a huge amount of customizing invloved , everything about the car can be changed and tuned to your liking. There are vinyl designs which can be added , new paint jobs , custom body kits , all the mechanics. Its really enjoyable tweaking your car and getting it how you want so you can win in style.
===Sound=== The sound of the game considering its generation are quite good , the sound changes slightly with the engine but the cars do sound the same , the sound of rushing traffic really gets your heart pounding and screeching tyres lead to bated breath.
===Graphics=== Again considering its generation , very good , none of the cars look out of place , the only real problem is the generic city and the fact its always dark.

| | | | | | NFS UNDERGROUND - NICE OR RICE? - Scores 4/5
I never really was a big fan of the Need For Speed series, I owned the first game, and hated the rest, mainly because of the unrealistc handling and cars that are impossible to own in real life. Then i heard about Underground, the sixth incarnation of Need For Speed. I must say it is a definate step in a different direction. From the moment that you hit the title screen, the bass-loaded music pumps and the main advasary's car appears behind the menu. Instantly hooked, i just -had- to investigate. Underground has a very slick exterior, shiny buttons, awsome alternative/hip hop soundtrack, and of course, the cars. After the opening race in the underground mode, I started with the MX-5, and added some parts like spoilers and bumpers. The choice is somewhat restricting at first, but thats the beauty of it. Auto Modellista (capcom) offered the same customisation abilities as underground, but offered them straight away, ruining the replay value. Anyway, the first races geve you a good feel for the game, its physics, which are exellent compared to previous NFS games, and the AI. As Underground mode progresses, the tracks become twistier and the traffic becomes heavier, and the AI becomes more and more evil and sadistic. But the learning curve is not too steep, as to alienate new players, and not too shallow, as to provide a challenge to the more experienced. However, there is a small flaw in the game's AI. After about race 86 in Underground mode, the game kicks in a handicap, allowing the AI to reach speeds of over 400km/h, but that keeps the challenge level up in the later stages of the game. The choice of real-world Tune ups is bewildering, I sometimes did not know which manufacturer to pick, even though they made no difference performance wise. every car is potentially different from any created, and the Vinyl decals and paint varieties are astonishing. The 4/5 is because of the handicap in the later races, but if you want a tip, de-tune (remove) the Exahast, ECU, Drivetrain, Turbo and NOS to handicap the AI... From the moment that I bought this game I was taken aback by the amazinggraphics. But after a month of playing it (and completing it) I was leftfeeling that graphics were not enough. I weighed up the pro's and cons andcame up short. PROS : graphics, CONS : Lack of depth, annoying tracks withno freedom, lack of styling parts and realsim. This game would have beenbetter with a Vice City or Midnight Club style lay out, where you can gowhere you want. Buy it, play it and move on. A great idea badly created. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 26 APRIL 2004 |
| | | | | | I LOVE THIS GAME - Scores 5/5
I've always been dissapointed with racing games in the past as none quite seem to be able to reach the benchmark set by the Gran Turismo series. To name just a few, I've tried TOCA Race Driver, Burnout 2, and Midnight Club 2. All of these I returned to the shop. So I wasnt holding out much hope for NFS:U. But... I have to say, this game is amazing. Ok, it's not a pure driving simulation and you can't really alter car setups and the like, but for any racing fans, the ability to alter the looks of your car and upgrade it with kit, is a great appeal. Each of the cars handle quite differently. My only niggle is however is that you can only own one car at a time, you dont get a garage like you do with Gran Turismo. The game has several different "modes" of play, like sprint (get from A to B within a set time), knock-out (last car at end of each lap is eliminated from the race), tournament (set of races, each earning points), drag (sprint up a stretch of road against other cars, controlling the gear changes), drifting (think skid-pan - in my opinion the weakest of all modes - I hate it). At the start of each career race mode, you get to select the difficulty, easy, medium, or hard; you earn more money for a higher difficulty. For medium to hard, you are pretty much out of the race if you crash even once. The AI is pretty good in this game, and they do make mistakes by crashing into walls on tight turns and traffic. My final down-point is that there is only one town to race in (as far as I know - I am 2/3 of the way through the game and nothing new yet...), and you soon get tired of racing round the same layout. Great game. Much fun to be had here. Even my girlfriend loves it! | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 18 APRIL 2004 |
| | | | | | GREAT GRAPHICS AND A GREAT GAME - Scores 5/5
Need for speed underground is one of the best games I have ever seen. I have'nt got it for myself but I've seen it when I went round my mates and the graphics are amazing, and I mean amazing. There are 111 races to be won. You start with a choice of a peogoet or a mx5 and you get different cars after winning the fiorst 5 races. When you get far (ex:20) you start getting paints and all different kinds of stuff. You start with help by aperson called stephanie and you race her on race 72 and after that you get the best car. The nissan skyline. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 14 MARCH 2004 |
